Building a Successful Team in Today’s Ice Cream, Italian Ice & Frozen Yogurt Shops

Running an Ice Cream, Italian Ice, or Frozen Yogurt shop today is about much more than having great products and a busy location. Your employees play a major role in the success of your business.

For many frozen dessert shops, employees are younger, often working one of their first jobs, and may only be with you for a season or two. That can create challenges, but it can also create opportunities.

The key is understanding that today's employees need more than a job. They need a reason to care about the job.

Make the Job an Experience

For a young employee, working at an ice cream shop can be much more than scooping ice cream, serving customers, and cleaning at the end of the night.

Make it an experience.

Teach your employees about your products. Let them taste new flavors. Explain the difference between your hand-dipped ice cream, Italian ice, and soft serve. Show them how the equipment works and explain why quality and consistency matter.

Most importantly, share your story.

Tell them why you started the business. Explain what makes your shop different. Talk about your favorite products and the customers you've built relationships with over the years.

When employees understand why your business exists, they are more likely to take pride in being part of it.

Train Employees to Sell, Not Just Serve

Your employees aren't simply people behind the counter. They are some of your most important salespeople. Every customer interaction is an opportunity to increase the sale and create a better experience.

Teach your employees to make simple recommendations:

"Have you tried our flavor of the week?"

"Would you like to add a topping?"

"Our signature flavor has been really popular, would you like to try it?"

"Are you looking for something new today?"

These aren't pushy sales techniques. They're conversations.

A customer who came in for one scoop may leave with two scoops, a topping, a specialty product, or a pint to take home simply because an employee made a good recommendation.

Give Employees Ownership

One of the easiest ways to get employees more involved is to give them a voice.

Ask them:

· What flavor should we try next?

· What promotion would customers enjoy?

· What's your favorite product?

· What do you think we could do better?

· What would make the shop more fun?

You may be surprised by the ideas they bring to the table. Your employees are interacting with customers every day. They hear what customers are talking about, what flavors they're asking for, and what gets them excited.

Listen to them.

Make Work Fun

Let's face it, Ice Cream, Italian Ice, and Frozen Yogurt shops are supposed to be fun.

Create an environment that feels that way. Consider friendly competitions between employees:

  • Who can sell the most specialty toppings?

  • Who can get the most customers to try the flavor of the week?

  • Who gets the most positive customer comments?

Recognize employees who go above and beyond. Celebrate birthdays, milestones, great customer service, and team accomplishments. It doesn't always take money to motivate people. Sometimes recognition, appreciation, and being told "You did a great job" can go a long way.

Teach More Than the Job

A first job can be an opportunity to teach young employees skills they'll carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Teach them about:

  • Customer service

  • Communication

  • Sales

  • Teamwork

  • Responsibility

  • Time management

  • Food safety

  • Problem solving

  • Handling money

  • Working under pressure

  • Don't underestimate the value of these lessons.

  • An employee who learns how to confidently communicate with customers at your counter is developing a skill that can benefit them long after they leave your shop.

Your Employees Are Your Brand

Your logo, signage, equipment, menu, and social media all contribute to your brand, but your employees bring that brand to life.

Think about what happens when a customer walks through your door.

Who greets them?

Who answers their questions?

Who recommends a flavor?

Who handles a complaint?

Who says goodbye?

Your employees.

Customers may forget exactly what flavor they ordered, but they often remember how they were treated.

That's why training your team to represent your brand is so important.

Don't Expect Employees to Know What You Haven't Taught Them

One of the biggest mistakes a business owner can make is assuming employees automatically know what to do.

They don't.

Teach them what great customer service looks like.

Teach them how you want products served.

Teach them how to clean.

Teach them how to handle equipment properly.

Teach them how to talk about your products.

And then reinforce those expectations throughout the season.

Training shouldn't happen only on the first day. Keep teaching. Keep coaching. Keep communicating.

Build a Team, Not Just a Schedule

Employees are more likely to care when they feel like they're part of a team. Create a culture where employees help each other, communicate, and understand that everyone has a role in the customer experience.

Your goal isn't simply to fill shifts. Your goal is to build a team that understands:

"We're all responsible for making this shop successful."

That mindset can make a tremendous difference during those busy summer nights when the line is out the door.

The Employee Experience Affects the Customer Experience

There's a direct connection between how employees feel about their workplace and what customers experience inside your store. If employees are engaged, knowledgeable, and having fun, customers notice.

If employees are frustrated, disconnected, or simply going through the motions, customers notice that too. Your customers are buying more than a scoop of ice cream or a cup of Italian ice. They're buying an experience. Your employees are a huge part of creating that experience.

A Message from Sentry Equipment

At Sentry Equipment, we work with Ice Cream, Italian Ice, and Frozen Yogurt operators who understand that success requires more than great equipment.

It requires great products, great people, and great customer experiences. Your equipment helps you produce the product. Your employees help bring that product to life.

Give your team the knowledge to understand what they're selling. Give them the confidence to talk about it. Give them opportunities to contribute ideas. And most importantly, give them a reason to take pride in the business they're representing.

The Final Scoop

The new generation of employees may work differently than employees did years ago—but that doesn't mean they can't become some of your greatest assets.

Teach them. Trust them. Challenge them. Recognize them. Have fun with them. Don't just give them a job for the summer. Give them an experience. Because when your employees care about your business, your customers can feel it. And when your customers feel it, they're more likely to come back.

At Sentry Equipment, we believe success starts with more than the equipment behind the counter. It starts with the people standing in front of it.
